How to choose a courier company

Are you moving house? Or maybe you just need to get some furniture between homes? Maybe you’re getting some second-hand furniture delivered? Whatever the reason, choosing a courier company can be tricky. Here are some tips to make sure you choose a reputable, experienced company:
Do your research
You want to start this step at least four weeks before you actually need the courier company, or six weeks if you’re planning to move house. It’s always a good idea to ask friends and family members for recommendations. If you don’t hear anything positive back, use your social networks to get a bigger response and even more options.
Another good option? Shiply. This cuts down the time you spend researching, since you only need to complete one form to get numerous results.
Get some quotes
Make sure you get at least a few professional quotes well before you actually need the company. Take into account the service you’ll receive, the price, and when the company is available to help. Some courier companies will offer a variety of extra options like packing services as well.
While many companies can give you an indicative quote on their website, it’s always better to get a more detailed assessment if you’re planning a big move. Removal companies will send out a representative to take a look at what you’re planning to move and give you a more accurate estimate.
Any good courier company will cover you with their insurance against any breakages or loss of your property while it’s in transit. Be sure to check that this is the case before you actually sign on the dotted line. You may also want to get in touch with your home contents insurer to check if they’ll also cover your property while it’s on the move. This is also a good time to find out what the courier company’s policy is if the move is delayed or you can’t get into your new property on the day.
Talk it out
You can easily tell which companies are professionals and which companies are cowboys by talking to them either on the phone or in person. How long do they take to respond to your enquiries? What type of language do they use? Are they willing to go above and beyond to keep your valuables safe?
If you’re choosing a courier company, use the above tips to ensure you get the best service possible.
