Everyone pays so much attention to North America and South America, that they forget there is a bit lying in the middle of it all. Sandwiched between those two popular spots is Central America, packed full of amazing sights to see, and experiences to be had. If you forgo this stunning part of the world, full of nature and architecture, with plenty of history to boot, then you’re seriously missing out.
If you are considering heading to Central America, here’s five sights you should definitely check out on your travels.
Mayan sites are always top tourist attractions, but Tikal is a little different, basically because it’s a little harder to get to, so only those serious about visiting bother going there. Once you arrive at your destination, through the jungle, then you will be treated with temples rising up to huge heights, authenticity, with more than enough nature along the way.
The Hummingbird Highway, Belize
History might be a big thing in Central America, but the natural element of it all certainly rivals it. The Hummingbird Highway takes you through lush jungle along the Maya Mountain Range, with stunning views, ones which will literally make your mouth drop. If you love diving, then be sure to stop at the Blue Hole along the way, one of the world’s most famous diving spots, descending deep down into the ocean.
Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua
This beautiful island is often overlooked by tourists, which does actually give it an off-the-beaten-track kind of feel. Two volcanic peaks tower into the sky, a total must see, perfect for amazing photographs. The beaches are wild and wide, there is plenty of wildlife to see, as well as archaeological sites to explore along the way.
Arenal Route, Costa Rica
The Arenal Route is an epic road trip, with the Arenal volcano in the distance. Skirting around Laguna de Arenal, the views are nothing short of amazing, with towns and villages along the way. The volcanic landscapes give way to lush greenery, and the actual appearance cannot be described – you need to see it to believe it.
Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, Costa Rica
The downside of this destination is that it is very touristy, but it’s touristy for a reason – because it’s amazing! There are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy in this beautiful natural setting, such as canopy walks and ziplining, for those into adrenaline rushes. Countless species of birds, mammals, and plants can be seen here, and biodiversity is top of the list.
There are countless other sights to see in Central America, and this is just a handful, but considering how amazing these five choices are, can you imagine how jaw-dropping the rest of the region will be?
