Recent research has revealed some interesting facts about sleep habits around the world, and shows that all of us need to be getting more snooze time, especially on work-nights. While this can often be because we’re working late, or juggling too many responsibilities, poor sleeping can also be due to a bad mattress. According to the infographic, most people aren’t napping enough. NASA did a study about naps, and found that those who snooze for a couple of hours a day are likely to have better concentration and memory than those who choose to stay awake. An afternoon nap is a given in many countries in Africa and the Mediterranean, and the Japanese are encouraged to nap at work as it shows that they’ve been working hard.
When it comes to sleeping, people in Canada get an average of 7 hours and 3 minutes, but in order to do their best at work and school they really should be getting 19 minutes more than this. On work nights 53% Canadians are actually getting less sleep than they need, which is bad news for the economy.
Mexicans get a few minutes more, with an average of 7 hours and 6 minutes on work nights. But unfortunately if they live in Mexico City they’re more likely to be getting just 6 hours and 32 minutes. This is a huge short-fall as most Mexicans actually need 8 hours and 15 minutes each night.
People in Japan are only getting 6 hours and 22 minutes on nights when they’ve been at work, but get a little more on non-work nights with an average of 7 hours and 12 minutes being the norm. It seems like those in big cities just don’t get enough sleep, since people in Tokyo are only getting a tiny 5 hours and 46 minutes per night. Definitely not enough to feel well-rested the next day.
The British are getting an average of 7 hours and 26 minutes on nights when they’re not working, and almost an hour less on work nights, with an average of 6 hours and 49 minutes.
Most Americans are chronically tired, with a tiny 4% saying that they get enough sleep. On work nights they only get around 6 hours and 31 minutes of Z’s, but get almost an hour more on non-work nights with most people getting around 7 hours and 22 minutes.
Germans are doing the best on non-work nights, with most of them getting eight straight. However they get an hour less for an average of 7 hours and 1 minutes on work nights.
