5 Songs you Need for your Next Road Trip

By on August 28, 2015

Ahhh road trips. Is there anything better than grabbing a group of friends, loading up the car, and heading out onto the open road? Road trips give you the freedom to go where you want, when you want, and you’ll find yourself in places you may not have initially thought you would end up.

1.Shut Up and Drive by Rihanna

Is this the most complex and complicated song you’ll ever listen to? No. But it’s definitely a fun tune to crank up as you hit the highway. This song came out in 2007 but is still a classic today, and guaranteed to have everyone singing along.

How it makes us feel: Like we’re really behind the wheel of a Lamborghini

Listen to it with: Four of your closest girlfriends (guys don’t truly understand Riri)

Listen to it when: You’re finally hitting the highway after picking everyone up

Best Lyric: “You got the keys baby, now shut up and drive”.

2. Mustang Sally by Wilson Pickett

This one will remind you of bad karaoke, but I bet everyone will know the words. Instead of singing about sex, early rock and roll singers would instead sing about cars…allowing you to read between the lines.

How it makes us feel: Like we should probably all go out to the bars at some stage during this road trip.

Listen to it with: Your significant other

Listen to it when: The sun is going down and you’re contemplating your plans for the night

Best Lyric: Ride, Sally, Ride”

3. Fast Car by Tracy Chapman

Who didn’t imagine getting in a fast car as a teenager, and driving off into the sunset? For anyone who has ever wanted to get out of a bad situation and start fresh, this song is about urban property, getting rid of deadbeats, and romantic freedom.

How it makes us feel: Like we could also get in a fast car and take off.

Listen to it with: Friends who are hoping for a fresh start.

Listen to it when: You’re finally taking off after a long time in a place you didn’t want to be.

Best Lyric: “City lights stretched out before us, your arm felt nice wrapped ‘round my shoulder”.

4. Dont Stop Believin by Journey

It’s unlikely anyone in the car won’t know pretty much all of the lyrics to this song. This is the perfect song for when you really want to let loose and have passengers in other cars staring.

How it makes us feel: Like we wish we could hit all those high notes.

Listen to it with: A car full of people from almost any age group.

Listen to it when: You’re taking a Southern road trip.

Best Lyric: “Don’t stop believing, hold on to that feeeeeling”.

5. Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd

One of the most iconic songs ever, no matter where you play it, everyone in the room (or car) becomes a temporary redneck.

How it makes us feel: Like we should move to Alabama

Listen to it with: Fans of country

Listen to it when: You’re on the way home

Best Lyric:  “Sweet home Alabama where skies are so blue, Sweet home Alabama, Lord I’m comin home to you.”
